Dutch Oven Equipment to fit the Cook’s Experience – A List

Your equipment list will vary depending upon what you plan to cook and your level of experience.  Review these equipment recommendations from the International Dutch Oven Society.

Beginner:

  • One Dutch oven: a 12″ Regular or 12″ Deep Dutch oven (2 Qt difference; depends on family size)
  • Hammer/heavy pliers as a lid lifter, tongs
  • Bag of charcoal briquettes, matches
  • Lighter fluid/newspaper to start briquettes
  • Charcoal Can: #10 can with holes punched into the sides to let air in to start charcoal.

Novice:

  • 12″ Regular or Deep Dutch oven (a 2 Qt difference)
  • Lid lifter, tongs
  • Tool bag/bucket
  • Charcoal chimney
  • Bag of charcoal briquettes, Fire Gel, matches
  • Cement bricks to raise fire pit level

Intermediate:

  • Two Dutch ovens with carry bags
    • one 12″ regular and one 12″ deep
    • or one 12″ and one 14″
  • Tool bucket w/tool holder pockets:
    • Lid lifter Tongs
    • Heat Gloves Thermometer
    • Trivets
  • Towel rack, hooks
  • Dutch Table (elevated to cook on)
  • Charcoal chimney, matches
  • Bag of charcoal briquettes, Fire Gel

Advanced:

  • Three Dutch ovens with carry bags:
    • One 12″ regular
    • One 12″ deep
    • One 14″
  • Tool bucket w/tool holder pockets:
    • Lid lifters
    • Tongs
    • Heat Gloves
    • Serving gloves
    • Trivets
    • Butane lighter
    • Thermometer
    • Shovel & broom
  • Dutch Table w/wind baffles, stove
  • Charcoal chimney, matches
  • Fold-in-half table with leg-lifters
  • Ice chest, ice jug
  • Wash basins, hot water pot
